The Blaze 181 for 6 (Knott 57) beat Yorkshire 179 for 5 (Jonassen 52, Kalis 47) by four wickets

Knott’s Debut Fifty Fires Blaze to Vitality Blast Victory

Charli Knott announced her arrival for The Blaze in spectacular fashion, smashing a 29-ball 57 on debut to guide her side to a thrilling four-wicket win over Yorkshire Women in the opening round of the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge.

Chasing a competitive 180, The Blaze were handed an early setback when 17-year-old leg-spinner Holly Garton removed England star Tammy Beaumont. But Knott, supported by Georgia Elwiss (20 off 17) and Sarah Bryce (28* off 17), ensured momentum remained within reach, ultimately sealing victory with three balls to spare.

Yorkshire Set the Stage with Power-Hitting

Yorkshire posted a formidable total thanks to explosive contributions from Australian all-rounder Jess Jonassen and Netherlands international Sterre Kalis. Jonassen, in particularly devastating form, blazed 52 off just 29 balls, continuing her white-ball brilliance after three centuries in her previous four Metro Bank One-Day Cup innings.

After being put in, Yorkshire lost openers Erin Thomas and Lauren Winfield-Hill early to Charley Phillips and Kirstie Gordon, leaving them at 25 for 2 in the third over. But Jonassen took immediate control, launching Knott over mid-on for consecutive fours and reverse-sweeping Lucy Higham twice in a row. A full toss was dispatched over the rope, making it 21 off the over.

  • Jonassen reached 52 from 28 balls before being caught by Tammy Beaumont at deep midwicket.
  • Kalis anchored the innings with a composed 47 off 40, building a 76-run partnership with Jonassen.
  • She then shared 46 off 29 with Ami Campbell (30 off 22), keeping the scoring surge alive.
  • Phillips returned to claim her third wicket, while Maddie Ward and Beth Langston added 18 in the final two overs.

Blaze Respond with Calm Under Pressure

The Blaze’s chase began steadily through opener Marie Kelly (29 off 26) and Kathryn Bryce, who guided the side to 47 for 1 after six overs. But back-to-back losses to leg-spinners Olivia Thomas and Garton threatened to derail the effort.

Knott and Elwiss responded with a rapid 57-run partnership off just 33 balls, lifting the required run rate and restoring control. Elwiss fell to a superb boundary catch by Kalis, Garton’s third wicket, but Knott continued to dominate, reaching a 27-ball fifty with his eighth boundary.

Hurled into the spotlight, Knott was bowled the next ball—but not before shifting the momentum firmly back to The Blaze.

Cool Finish Seals the Win

With 23 needed off three overs, new batter Emma Jones smashed the final two balls of Beth Langston’s over for four, easing the pressure. Sarah Bryce, calm and composed, then struck three boundaries in the final overs—including the winning hit—as The Blaze reached 181 for 6.

Holly Garton’s 3 for 23 stood out for Yorkshire, but it wasn’t enough to contain the Blaze’s late push. Charley Phillips’ 3 for 31 had earlier provided crucial early breakthroughs, keeping Yorkshire’s total just within reach.

The victory marks a perfect start to the Vitality Blast campaign for The Blaze, with Knott’s explosive debut and Bryce’s nerveless finish proving the difference in a high-quality, edge-of-the-seat encounter.
