Punjab Kings Address Arshdeep Singh Controversy Amidst IPL 2026 Drama
The Changing Tide for Arshdeep Singh
For several years, Arshdeep Singh was heralded as one of the most charismatic and beloved figures in Indian cricket. Fans frequently gravitated toward his humorous nature and witty personality on social media. However, the dynamics of his public image have shifted dramatically during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, as a string of controversies threatens to overshadow his on-field achievements.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
The latest wave of criticism stems from a video posted to Arshdeep’s own Snapchat account. In the footage, the pacer was heard directing a colourist remark toward his India teammate and fellow World Cup winner, Tilak Varma, referring to him as ‘Andhera’ (darkness). This incident triggered a significant backlash from netizens, who pointed out that this was not an isolated event. Observers noted that Arshdeep has previously made similar, disparaging remarks regarding teammates Sai Sudharsan and Sakib Hussain, leading to accusations of a pattern of casual prejudice.
These social media gaffes are merely the latest in a turbulent season for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) bowler. Throughout IPL 2026, Arshdeep has been at the center of multiple disputes. Earlier reports alleged a heated verbal altercation with PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer at an airport, while another viral video captured the player with his rumoured girlfriend, Samreen Kaur, on the team bus—a move that violated strict BCCI protocols regarding guest access to team transport.
Franchise Response and Internal Stability
Facing mounting pressure to address the situation, the Punjab Kings management has attempted to maintain a sense of calm. On the eve of a crucial encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala, Andrew Leipus, the PBKS Head of Sports Science, addressed the media. Leipus focused on the player’s professional conduct within the team environment, opting to distance the franchise from the digital discourse.
“I don’t follow a lot of social media myself,” Leipus stated when questioned about the controversy. “I know there’s been a bit of chatter behind the scenes, vlogging, and whatnot. In terms of his behaviour, Arsh is pretty much a flat line. He’s not up or down. He gives his best out there.”
Addressing the Physical and Professional Balance
Leipus further noted that the team has been working closely with Arshdeep to manage his physical well-being. According to the Head of Sports Science, previous performance inconsistencies were largely linked to physical restrictions rather than attitude. “He’s been feeling a lot better in the last couple of weeks, physically,” Leipus explained. “Overall, he’s pretty consistent with his behaviour and his attitude. He’s a very loud person in the dressing room. That hasn’t changed. He’s very calm.”
The Digital Dilemma in Modern Cricket
Beyond the specific issues involving Arshdeep, Leipus highlighted a broader concern regarding the influence of social media on young cricketers. He candidly admitted that the constant presence of mobile devices in team spaces creates challenges for coaching staff.
“You look across every team, you’ll see guys are sitting there on their phones in the buses,” Leipus observed. “It is a problem. One of the best things the ICC ever did was take phones away. When we go into the dressing room, guys can start talking again.”
While acknowledging that there is a delicate balance between commercial obligations and team focus, Leipus emphasized that the current environment is something that the cricketing establishment needs to address more rigorously. As the season progresses, the Punjab Kings will likely continue to monitor their star bowler’s conduct both on and off the field, hoping to steer the narrative back toward cricket and away from the noise of social media.
