Tamim: Building a world-class High Performance Centre ‘my biggest dream’
A New Chapter for Bangladesh Cricket under Tamim Iqbal
The landscape of Bangladesh cricket is poised for a significant transformation. Newly elected Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president and former national captain Tamim Iqbal has officially taken the reins with a clear, ambitious vision. Having transitioned from a legendary opening batsman to the highest administrative office in Bangladesh cricket, Tamim is wasting no time in addressing the core issues plaguing the sport in the country. At the very top of his agenda is a massive infrastructural overhaul designed to secure the long-term future of the national game.
Tamim: Building a world-class High Performance Centre ‘my biggest dream’
During his first major press briefing as the full-time BCB chief, Tamim laid out his structural plans, emphasizing that Tamim: Building a world-class High Performance Centre ‘my biggest dream’ remains his ultimate objective. The planning for this ambitious project did not begin overnight. It started when the Bangladesh government appointed him as the head of the ad hoc committee last April. Since then, Tamim has been working behind the scenes to conceptualize a state-of-the-art facility located in Dhaka’s eastern suburb of Purbachal.
“The High Performance Center is probably my biggest dream,” Tamim stated. “I hope that I can fulfill this dream. We will need big support from the government. Initially the BCB can fund this center. We have asked the company that designed the existing centre for a re-design. We hope that we can start the centre in Purbachal.”
Securing Government Support and Funding
Establishing an international-standard facility is an expensive endeavor, and Tamim is fully aware of the financial hurdles. To ensure the project moves from blueprint to reality, the BCB will actively seek government assistance. Tamim has already initiated high-level talks to secure the necessary backing. “As you can imagine, such a large-scale project requires a lot of money,” he explained. “We will definitely seek the government’s support in that regard. I have met the country’s finance minister about it, he was very positive about the project so now we have to apply to the government.”
The Limitations of Existing Infrastructure
Currently, the BCB operates a High Performance Centre located on the premises of the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. However, this facility is highly limited in scope, space, and modern training amenities. With the demands of modern international cricket constantly evolving, a congested facility inside an existing stadium complex is no longer sufficient to nurture elite talent. The proposed Purbachal facility is expected to offer expansive grounds, cutting-edge sports science laboratories, modern gymnasiums, and specialized training pitches that mimic varying international conditions.
Restoring Reputation and Rebuilding Relationships
Beyond physical infrastructure, the new presidency faces the immediate challenge of repairing the BCB’s public image. The past year and a half has been tumultuous for Bangladesh cricket, marked by high-profile controversies, the national team’s absence at the T20 World Cup, and tense standoffs resulting in media boycotts. Tamim acknowledged these shortcomings openly, emphasizing that structural reform must go hand-in-hand with cultural reform.
“The players need to be respected as much as possible – not just current cricketers, but former cricketers too,” Tamim asserted. “Every stakeholder in Bangladesh cricket will be respected. It was maybe lacking in the BCB in the last one and a half years. We have to come together and fix this damaged reputation of Bangladesh cricket.”
A Commitment to Administrative Transparency
One of the most persistent criticisms directed at the BCB in recent years has been a lack of transparency and unilateral decision-making. In response, Tamim has vowed to run an open, honest, and accountable administration. He highlighted his commitment to creating a controversy-free environment where mistakes are acknowledged and corrected swiftly.
“I want to ensure maximum transparency,” Tamim said. “I am sure that all of us at the board are not going to do anything controversial. We want to work with full honesty. I am sure we will make mistakes, but I look forward to seeing how quickly we rectify those mistakes.”
The Weight of Responsibility
Stepping into the role of BCB president is a monumental task, but the former captain is approaching the challenge with humility and determination. Rather than viewing the position as a personal achievement, he sees it as a duty to the sport that defined his life.
“There is no extra feeling that I have become something really big,” Tamim reflected. “It is a massive responsibility. I have spoken about so many things about the cricket board for the last few years, so now I feel that this is the time when I have to prove myself to everyone.” With his eyes set on both physical infrastructure and cultural rebuilding, Tamim’s tenure promises to be one of the most defining eras in the history of Bangladesh cricket.
