LPL 2026: Pre-Draft Signings and Full Schedule Revealed
The Countdown to LPL 2026 Begins
The anticipation for the sixth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) has reached a fever pitch as Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirms the final structure, pre-draft signings, and the official tournament schedule. Set to be a marquee event in the global T20 calendar, the 2026 edition promises high-octane action from July 17 to August 8.
Strategic Postponement for Success
Initially slated for late 2025, the tournament underwent a strategic rescheduling. The postponement was a calculated move by the SLC to ensure that all infrastructure and venues were perfectly prepared for the men’s T20 World Cup, which Sri Lanka successfully co-hosted alongside India earlier this year. This decision has allowed the LPL to capitalize on the momentum of international cricket, ensuring world-class facilities for the upcoming league.
Pre-Draft Signings and Franchise Building
In a significant boost for the Galle Gallants, the franchise has secured the services of Dasun Shanaka, a teammate of the rising sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the IPL. The move is seen as a major statement of intent from the Galle management as they look to build a championship-winning roster around experienced leadership.
Other franchises have also been busy securing their core talent ahead of the June 1 draft:
- Dambulla Sixers: Have bolstered their ranks with pacer Dushmantha Chameera and veteran campaigner Dinesh Chandimal.
- Jaffna Kings: Aiming to maintain their championship pedigree by signing Dunith Wellalage and the explosive Bhanuka Rajapaksa.
- Kandy Falcons: Have retained the services of superstar spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and the evergreen Angelo Mathews.
- Colombo Kaps: Have locked in star batter Kusal Mendis and the versatile all-rounder Kamindu Mendis.
- Galle Gallants: Beyond Shanaka, they have added the talented pacer Eshan Malinga to their squad.
Tournament Structure and Draft Rules
The LPL 2026 will feature five competitive teams: Jaffna, Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Dambulla. Each team is mandated to assemble a squad of at least 18 players, with the option to expand to 20. A key focus this year is the promotion of local talent, with each squad required to include at least two Under-23 Emerging players. Furthermore, the playing XI rules remain competitive, allowing for up to four foreign players per match to ensure a balance of international quality and local development.
The player registration window was a hive of activity, opening on May 8 and closing on May 20. While the draft is scheduled for June 1, direct signings have been permitted until May 22, allowing franchises to finalize their base structures before the official selection process begins.
The Official LPL 2026 Schedule
The tournament kicks off on July 17 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds in Colombo with a high-stakes rematch of the 2024 final between the reigning champions, Jaffna Kings, and the runners-up, Galle Gallants. Matches will be played under lights, promising a spectacular atmosphere for fans.
The competition follows a traveling format across Sri Lanka’s premier venues:
- July 17–19: Opening matches at SSC Grounds, Colombo.
