R Ashwin Analyses Mumbai Indians IPL 2026 Collapse

Former India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin has delivered a sobering verdict on the Mumbai Indians dismal IPL 2026 campaign, pinpointing a combination of individual underperformance, persistent injuries, and leadership strain as the core reasons behind their shocking decline.

From Contenders to Casualties

Mumbai Indians, once the benchmark of consistency in the IPL, finished near the bottom of the table in 2026 with only four wins from 14 matches. Their playoff hopes were extinguished after a last-ball defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur, marking their third elimination in five seasons. The team that once claimed five titles between 2013 and 2020 has now gone six consecutive seasons without lifting the trophy.

Their season began with a rare win in their opener after a 14-year drought in that fixture, but it was quickly followed by a four-match losing streak. A brief victory over Gujarat Titans was sandwiched between further losses, ultimately leaving MI with no momentum and too little time to recover.

The Bumrah Breakdown

The most alarming revelation came from Ashwins sharp analysis of Jasprit Bumrahs form. The pace spearhead, widely regarded as one of the worlds best T20 bowlers, delivered a statistically disastrous tournament. Bumrah managed just four wickets in 13 matches at a staggering average of 102.50 the worst by any bowler who played a full season in IPL history.

This is the first time in the history of IPL that a bowler has averaged over 100 after playing the full season, and thats Jasprit Bumrah. I dont think anybody would have believed me if I had said this before the season, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, underscoring the magnitude of Bumrahs struggles.

Bumrah reportedly played through an injury, which may have contributed to his inability to maintain his usual line, length, and aggression. His absence of impact at key moments left MIs bowling attack vulnerable, especially in the death overs.

Trent Boult Fallout and Squad Depth

Ashwin also suggested that Mumbai Indians might move on from Trent Boult, despite the franchises One Family ethos. Boult, signed for INR 12.50 crores in 2025, failed to deliver in 2026, taking only two wickets in five matches at an average of 94 and an economy rate over 11. He was eventually dropped from the playing XI.

I think they will release Trent Boult to free up their purse. That I am very sure of, Ashwin stated, adding that financial flexibility could become a priority despite sentimental attachments.

Hardik Pandyas Leadership and Form Woes

Hardik Pandyas dual-role challenge came under scrutiny as well. The captain scored 206 runs at an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 138, far below his usual explosive standards. With the ball, he took four wickets at nearly 65 apiece and an economy close to 11.5.

Ashwin pointed to possible fatigue or injury as causes for the dip.

Hardik used to bat at No. 4 and No. 5 for Gujarat Titans. He used to take down the spinners. But this time, it looks like he has a small problem with the hard length ball. I dont know why. It could be fatigue or injury, Ashwin observed.

Injury Crisis Deepens the Woes

Injuries crippled MIs campaign. Rohit Sharma missed crucial matches due to toe and hamstring issues. Both Mitchell Santner and Quinton de Kock were ruled out for the entire season, severely impacting balance and batting depth. Pandya himself missed two games late in the season due to a back spasm.

What Lies Ahead in IPL 2027?

Looking forward, Ashwin offered a cautious forecast for MIs 2027 prospects.

This Mumbai Indians team seemed a bit strange. It cannot be easy. With the quality they have, maybe they can play well next year. But I wont be surprised if they also find it hard for one more year, he said. It looks like a lot of people are not at their best. I was surprised this year, but I wouldnt be if they give a middling performance next year.

For a franchise of Mumbai Indians stature, merely avoiding the wooden spoon is no longer acceptable. Rebuilding trust, re-evaluating selections, and managing player workload will be critical if they hope to reclaim their legacy in the seasons to come.
