Julian Metherell Named as Next MCC President: A New Era at Lord’s
A New Chapter for the Home of Cricket
The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has officially announced that Julian Metherell, the current chair of the London Spirit, will serve as the club’s next president. Metherell is set to succeed the incumbent, Ed Smith, in October 2026, stepping into a role that carries immense historical significance and modern responsibility. His appointment marks a pivotal moment for the MCC as it navigates the evolving landscape of professional cricket.
A Wealth of Financial Expertise
Metherell brings an impressive professional background to the MCC presidency. A long-standing member of the club for four decades, he enjoyed a stellar career in finance. From 1999 to 2011, he served as a partner at Goldman Sachs, where he held the position of Chief Executive Officer of the UK investment banking division between 2006 and 2011. Beyond banking, he founded Genel Energy and has held various interests across the shipping and energy sectors. His leadership skills extend into academia and player representation as well; he chairs the Advisory Board of the Judge Business School at Cambridge University and previously served as the Non-Executive Chair of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024.
The London Spirit Connection
Metherell’s influence within the cricket world has been most recently felt through his pivotal role in The Hundred. He was instrumental in overseeing the MCC’s negotiations during the 2025 equity sale. In that landmark deal, a Silicon Valley consortium—led by Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora—secured a 49% stake in the London Spirit for approximately £145 million, establishing the franchise as the wealthiest in the competition. Following the transfer of the franchise from the ECB to these new owners on October 1, 2025, Metherell was named chair, cementing his role as a key architect of the team’s future.
A Vision for the Future
Reflecting on his appointment, Metherell expressed deep gratitude and excitement. “I am deeply honoured to take on the role of MCC President, following in the footsteps of many of my cricketing idols,” he stated. “I have a long connection with MCC and I have many cherished memories at Lord’s. This is a really exciting time to be involved with the MCC, especially as it starts a new era of ownership of a professional cricket team and I am looking forward to driving forward both the Club and London Spirit.”
Endorsement from Ed Smith
The nomination was put forward by the outgoing president, Ed Smith, who highlighted Metherell’s unique blend of professional expertise and emotional connection to the club. “During such an exciting period for MCC, I wanted to choose a successor with huge expertise and experience, combined with a deep passion for the game and for the club,” Smith noted. “Julian Metherell is a great and trusted friend to cricket and an exceptional candidate. It is with enormous pleasure that I nominate him as the President of MCC from 1 October 2026.”
Looking Toward the 2027 Ashes
The transition arrives at a crucial time for the sport. As the MCC continues to modernize, the club has already seen the integration of London Spirit’s identity into its broader portfolio, including a rebranded logo and kit that incorporates the iconic MCC ‘egg-and-bacon’ livery. Under Metherell’s upcoming tenure, Lord’s will face one of its most anticipated challenges: hosting Australia’s men’s and women’s teams for the 2027 Ashes series. With Metherell at the helm, the MCC is clearly positioning itself to balance its rich traditions with the high-stakes demands of modern global cricket.
