Watson confirmed that Raghuvanshi had sustained a concussion alongside other painful symptoms, ruling him out of any further participation in the contest.
“Ankrish, unfortunately, ran a long way to be able to try and get that catch. And unfortunately, the collision that he had with Varun Chakravarthy meant that he ended up having some neck pain, a bit of dizziness and a bit of a headache within a couple of overs of that as well,” Watson explained during the post-match press interaction.
Watson praised the young cricketer’s immense fighting spirit, noting how difficult it was to keep him off the field. “So, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to finish off the game. And I know how desperate he was as well. He’s someone who is as tough a competitor as I’ve ever met. So we certainly missed him from a batting perspective,” the former Australian all-rounder added.
The Concussion Substitute Confusion Explained
The severity of Raghuvanshi’s condition forced KKR to trigger the IPL’s concussion substitute protocol. However, this process was not without its administrative hurdles. Kolkata Knight Riders initially announced all-rounder Ramandeep Singh as the replacement player via their official social media channels.
This decision was quickly corrected by the match officials. Under the governing rules of the tournament, a concussion substitute must be a “like-for-like” replacement. Since Raghuvanshi was designated as the team’s wicketkeeper-batter for the fixture, the officials ruled that KKR had to field another wicketkeeper.
