In a move aimed at rejuvenating the state’s cricket fortunes, Yo Mahesh appointed TN head coach; Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor signifies a major shift in how two of India’s most successful domestic sides are approaching the 2026-27 campaign. Yo Mahesh, the 38-year-old former seamer, has been tasked with leading both the red-ball and white-ball squads. This appointment comes on the heels of his successful tenure overseeing the Tamil Nadu Under-19 setup, signaling the TNCA’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent through the ranks.
The appointment, confirmed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the TNCA, sees Mahesh replacing the split-coaching duo of M Senthilnathan and M Venkataramana. The previous season proved to be a difficult one for the state, as they failed to qualify for the knockouts in the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. To bolster his backroom staff, Mahesh will be supported by J Hariesh, the head coach of Lyca Kovai Kings in the TNPL and an assistant batting coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, specifically during the white-ball leg of the domestic season.
Yo Mahesh, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2020, brings a wealth of experience to the role. During his playing career, he was a formidable presence, claiming 108 wickets in 50 first-class appearances and 93 wickets in List A cricket at an impressive average of 24.67. His exposure to the highest levels of the game, including stints with the Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, is expected to be invaluable for the young Tamil Nadu squad.
Mumbai Turns to Experience with Sandeep Patil

The Mumbai Cricket Association has officially announced that Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor, bringing a World Cup-winning pedigree to the dressing room. Patil, 69, is an iconic figure in Indian cricket, having played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs between 1980 and 1986. His contributions were central to India’s historic 1983 World Cup victory, where he scored 216 runs at an aggressive strike rate of 90.
Beyond his playing days, Patil boasts a distinguished resume in coaching, having guided the India A side and served as a coach for the Kenya national team. His mentorship role is designed to provide the players with strategic insight and high-pressure experience as they navigate a demanding domestic calendar.
Meanwhile, the core coaching structure in Mumbai remains stable, with Omkar Salvi retained as the team’s head coach for a fourth consecutive season. Salvi’s reputation as a tactical mastermind has grown significantly, especially following his success as the bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he played a pivotal role in securing back-to-back IPL titles.
